A friend has had it in his drawer over 20years and we can’t figure it out.
The long shaft rotates and turns the inner dial. The outer dial turns also, slower than the inner.
Whole thing is about length of your hand.

UPDATE: Answer Found

I received response from email I left with the Starrett people. They sent me a pdf of instructions, some of which I reproduce here:

#104 & #107 SERIES SPEED INDICATORS

The #104 (black body) and the 4107 (nickel body) speed indicators are inexpensive units for checking the RPM’s of a machine spindle, shaft, wheels and similar applications. This is accomplished by placing the point on the end of a shaft and counting the number of revolutions of the dial.

The #104 can be used for up to 200ORPM. When the point is applied to a revolving shaft, the inner disc is held from turning by firmly pressing on the raised knob with the thumb or forefinger. Then by releasing, the pressure at the time the knob on the outer dial coincides with the knob being held, the disc will revolve. Every 100 revolutions of the spindle is counted by feeling the inner knob pass under the thumb or forefinger. Timing the number of revolutions for a minute will give the RPM.

The #107 is similar to the #104, except it can be used for higher speeds because the revolutions are automatically counted up to 5000. The large outer dial has one hundred graduations, each representing one revolution of the spindle. The smaller inner dial has 50 grooved lines on its face, each representing 100 revolutions of the spindle (or one complete turn of the large dial). A spring, finger attached to the case engages with one of the grooved lines of the small dial, preventing the dial from revolving until the large dial makes one complete turn. With each complete turn of the large dial, the knob trips the spring finger and the small dial moves along to the next grooved line, thus showing that 100 revolutions of the spindle have been made. One complete revolution of the small dial indicates 5,000 revolutions of the spindle. These speed indicators were made from before 1900 until approximately 2006.

It would not be possible to date these as there was very little change throughout this time.

Thanks to the Starrett people.

Making History

Filed under: Technology, work — dnw @ 10:57 pm

I try not to talk too much about work but I’m laid up here in Horizontal HQ (bed) and a certain pixie has been on my back (figuratively speaking) to blog yet my mind’s a bit of a haze from a cold. So I thought I’d show you what we been working on as it went live today.

History of Disability in South Australia.

You can go there to find out what it’s all about. I wanted to relay a few details about it. I kind of wanted to put a (beta) sign on it as there’s much more in plan for it. We want to enable a way to comment on the articles and stories, to allow conversations about and around the content while it adds to the richness at the same time. You know, “I went to that school too, I found…” type discussion.

My major focus when building out the infrastructure was to allow it to scale over time and be easy for the staff who adds stuff to do so. Also not having access to bunches of resources (including our funding which was recently cut in half) I wanted to use tools and services available where possible and not re-invent the wheel.

It’s based on a wordpress backend that’s been modded for easy content management, Flickr for images and lots of custom kludges to bring it together. The whole thing is tag based so offers extreme flexibility for future. We plan to also build fulfilment services in and make use of classification of resources ongoing by incorporating the ability for people to add to the collective by submitting tags. Search also is anticipated.

All these things should be relatively easy to implement given time due the nature of wordpress.

There’s been lots of behind the scenes things that conspired to never let it come to pass, but at least now we have the first building blocks down.

LongTailJewel, SecondOpinion and NewTailBlog – Affermative Action in the Blogosphere

Filed under: Blogging, Recognition, Thoughts — dnw @ 11:11 am

I see my friend, JP, over on Confused of Calcutta, has picked up on the idea of bringing some equality to the blogosphere by highlighting lesser known bloggers and tagging the post newtailblog.

This is right along the lines of what Mike and I picked up on and were discussing back in February through a conversation in our blogs that we termed at the time longtailjewel. Kent Newsome also joined the conversation and called it second opinion along with Mathew Ingram, who actually picked up on the idea of Kents and featured me and my blogs as the one he linked to.

The idea Mike and I had of ‘jewels in the longtail’ and going hunting for them was about finding the social end of the longtail and is encapsulated by the thought that we wanted to ensure ‘every voice has at least one listener‘. We also spoke about it on a couple of podcasts Mike and I did while I was laid up with a broken shoulder.

I had some discussion over the concept of equality in the blogosphere with Hugh from GapingVoid. The equality argument came out of Clay Shirky and the quoted Skirky’s law of ‘equality, fairness, opportunity-pick 2′, which says basically that in the blogosphere you can have only 2 of those 3 attributes. In a post I wrote titled ‘Pick a card, any two’, I stated that “if opportunity means something like fame, (or goggle juice) in the blogsosphere, then Mike and I pick equality and fairness as our two”.

At the time, Doc Searles picked up on this idea in a post called affirmative traction.

Its great to see someone like JP getting behind the concept of making the blogosphere a more inclusive place for people and taking some affirmative action.

“Connections happen when stories overlap” is what I say – I love this kind of story overlap. And I love the idea of more connections happenning by including more people’s stories.

Below are some links to discussions I have previously blogged about or refered to around this issue.

Goodbye Horizontal HQ

Filed under: Thoughts — dnw @ 7:13 pm

Had a day off Tuesday. Went to the specialist to have an xray of the broken arm. Last time I have to see him. Apparently the bonmes started to knit and staying in the place it was when all this strarted.

Thing is it appears it isn’t, or never has been, lined up where it should be. The bone is therefore left on a different angle, so remains to be seen if, after physio, I get the range back in it I had before.

Has reminiscences of my ankle, which years ago I broke without knowing and then by time doctor found out it had set and so now remains crooked.

Anway, all this means for stint in Horizontal headquarters is now over. I’m still keeping focused on a more permanent setup for my horizontal computing needs but it’s a slow process. Latest thinking is either a monitor suspended from ceiling or a projector setup. I’ll report more over on Lifekludger as it happens.

So, for now, here ends the Horizontal HQ saga.

Pick a card, any two!

Filed under: Blogging, Thoughts — dnw @ 1:59 am

Our jewel code:

my %blogosphere = &assessment;

if($blogosphere {’opportunity’} eq ‘fame’) {
# do nothing
}
else {print “equality & fairness\n”;
}

“If opportunity means something like fame (or google-juice) in the blogosphere, then Dave and I would pick equality and fairness as our ‘two’.”

That bit of perl code is a geeky way of expressing what Mike clarifies beautifully above as where we are coming from and where our focus is.

Mike came back from a weekend away and wrote a great post about the longtailjewel, second opinion conversation. He tells it much better than I over on his Learndog blog.

We had a chat about it – a bit more discussion we’re putting out there as a podcast.
