Context Redux

Doc Searls Weblog · Context is King

“What matters is context. I’m tired of having companies guess at what my context is. I know what my contexts are. I know how they change. I want my own ways of changing contexts, and of informing services of what those contexts are. In some cases I don’t mind their guessing. In a few I even appreciate it. But in too many cases their guesses only get in the way. The Google search case is just one of them.”

What underlines Doc’s experience is this issue of control.

Anyway, seeing Doc write about this got me thinking about what I was hung up on when I wrote back in 2005:

“These different modes we operate in. This is our context and this is what is getting me hung up about attention. Attention only measures what we look at not why we are.”

http://dnwallace.com/blog/2005/11/11/im-hung-up-on-the-concept-of-context/

Assumptions sap our ability to control what is ours.

iTunes menu makes no sense – Is Apple paying attention?

Okay. That’s it. I’ve had enough of seeing this message in iTunes that makes no sense every time I’m in my Podcasts area.

It seems a couple versions ago someone decided at Apple that we never actually listen to audio podcasts anymore. No folks, that’s just not allowed. How uncouth. Don’t you know that since youtube we all watch videos. And podcasts are only ever video. I mean, come on, get with it.

So now when you’re in iTunes and go to mark a podcast feed to indicate you’ve listened to them all you’re greeted with the menu selection “Mark as Watched“.

Screen shot 2010-03-15 at 4.34.48 PM.JPG

Excuse me? Since when do you watch an audio podcast? Why doesn’t it say “Mark all as Listened”?

What happened to Apple finesse?

For years Apple prided itself on the little finishing touches that made us feel that things were just okay with the world. Often unseen things were simply just right, like dates changing format with column widths and context etc. But now it seems things just get changed on a whim.

Come on Cupertino. Don’t just settle for flashy wow innovation on new devices. Wow us with the finesse and continuity of thought and attention to detail we are used to.

Depth = Full Focus Attention

Mark Pesce in his contribution to a piece on ABC Unleased shares in “My dreams for 2010″

What Mark refers to as depth is what Linda Stone calls “the next aphrodisiac” in her talk at Supernova 2005 – Full Focused Attention.

Five years into Linda’s 20 year cycle framework of culture, cycle where swinging back to the individual as a centre of gravity. Full focus attention. It’s why I’ve focused, from time to time, on things such openness, sharing, and context.

Culture creates the technology it needs to fulfil its desires.

Mark Pesce, author, technologist, futurist.
We have become broad grazers of culture. Over the last decade, our ability to ‘go wide’ has reached unprecedented levels.

Whether an uprising in Iran, a celebrity marriage gone sour, or the trivial factoids which obsess us, we now have the tools to take it all in, all the time, wherever we are.

The mainstream media have tried to follow us on or flight path into breadth, only succeeding in becoming more insubstantial.

But the time for breadth is over. We’ve passed the test – with high marks. We need to move along.

The other and mostly unexplored axis of an information-saturated culture is depth. Each of us has the capacity to dive in and learn more about almost anything than ever before.

It nearly always starts with Wikipedia, which then points you to another resource, which points to another, and another, until, at the end, something like real mastery has been achieved.

With depth comes judgment; walk a mile in another’s shoes and you can know their thoughts. It’s not fast food, but it is a nutritious meal.

It’s interesting to note that the big movie this year (and probably the decade) is James Cameron’s Avatar. Uttered at its climax, the film’s catch phrase is, ‘I see you.’

Three words framing an experience of depth, one soul knowing the soul of another. That might be too much to ask on a planet of nearly seven billion souls, but we know we are lacking, and long to restore balance. Depth must take its place alongside breadth as a core human capability in the era of hyperinformation.

Without it, we will simply evaporate into ephemera and trivia. But with it – and this is my dream – we can reach the rock-solid core of being.

2gether08 | JP recaps Cluetrain: we are human amidst the tech

JP identified five themes from Cluetrain:

  1. people are human beings
  2. people work in communities, and community extends beyond the walls of the firm
  3. hypelinks subvert hierarchies … and so conversations can go laterally, not just up and down the ladder of control
  4. conversations are richer with the new tools available, and firms have less capacity to control their employees and customers
  5. people, in that context, have some power, and what is happening has a democratising influence.

JP also offered four themes for future exploration: governance of the Internet; consumers’ ability to aggregate their own information; identify; and intellectual property rights.

Post Industrial Context Shifting and Network Productivity

Filed under: Connection, Openness, Signal, Thoughts, context — dnw @ 5:27 pm

Back in 2005 after thinking about “Attention, Recognition & Context” I wrote in 2006 that I was “hung up on the concept of context“  and a bit later “On context and openness

Which lead to the thinking about how I do what I do at Lifekludger, documented in the “Contexts and Clues” section of the About page as — “To get from one context to another takes a Kludge!“….

So just the other week I get a ping from @fang about the book kluge —–

Then I see a tweet from @kanter asking “what is the sweet spot between personal productivity and connectedness?

My response (below) gets quoted by her in a blog post “What’s the sweet spot between personal productivity and social productivity?here ……

Which leads me to read Stowe Boyd’s post about “Information Overload, Schmoverload“, and his thoughts on network productivity here ……

Then I talk about it with Mike on our podcast here …..

And so there I am, reading Stowe again, critiquing more mainstream media articles on the so-called ‘curse of multitasking’ and the over emphasis placed on ‘personal’ productivity – “…the war on Flowhere ….

And what do I read? “In the wonderful book, Kluge, Gary Marcus makes a solid case that the human mind is really bad at memory, and that we have developed all sorts of compensating techniques to counter that weakness. Our memories can be demonstrably changed by simple shifts in context ….

From Context to Context via a connected kludge.

We need connection to others and to other’s thinking if nothing more than a technique to counter our weaknesses – we need a networked life.

And this holds true in any area of application – personal or professional.

That, my networked friends, is life network productivity.

Thoughts from the road – change, steps and the signal.

Filed under: Signal, Thoughts — dnw @ 7:16 am

Took a quick trip bush.

Getting into the van, this line came to me:

Into the cockpit of our future
Fly the memories of our past

That’s not quoting anyone, it’s my original thought. There’s a poem in there somewhere. Maybe the rest will appear sometime. Or maybe it’s just stimulus.

Sitting in the back of the van, half sleeping, gives lots of
opportunity for catching up on podcasts and things I haven’t listened
to for a while….or thought about.

Here’s a line from Bruce Cockburn that resonates:

You’ve no idea how I long
For even one loving caress
For you to step into my heart
Without deception or duress

That comes from “Life Short Call Now” the song, off the album by the same name. I also got stuck on the song “Slow Down Fast”. (I’ve quoted these before, last year, but without context).

I wonder about the dichotomy that seems to exists between the two songs. “Life’s short”, seemingly urging us to speed up action and “Slow Down” drawing us to the opposite conclusion. Of course the answer lay in the detail, and in context the songs are both valid and both saying the same thing – think about what you’re doing, right here, right now.

In my common parlance they’re both saying – find and focus on the signal.

Tension, balance, change.

Which got me to thinking why it is I’ve never driven change in my own life. So much of my life seems to be having change forced upon me. I admire people who can say I want a change, I want to be doing this, this and this, and do it.

Sure, those who know me know that there’s reasons I might feel this way. We all have limitations and things we can and can’t do, I’m talking about changing those things we cam. But I especially think this stuff is harder when it comes to fundamental personality issues. Like always wanting to be a poet, or architect but for various reasons becoming a doctor. But you can’t deny who you are.

So I thought perhaps I need to draw a line in my own sandbox and take a step over it. Even if it’s just a little step; a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

I decided to make a decision (there’s an odd line for you). I’m going to do that writing course I’ve been thinking about for the past couple years. I’m telling you here so you’ll hold me to it. If I’m bad at creating the change I want in my life, rather than that I think others do, then maybe I should get help. Tag, you’re it, dear reader!

I might fail, but then again, as they say in the excellent Australian movie “The Dish” – “Failure is never quite as bad as regret“.
