My first appearance in an online video

I don’t believe it. Mike has unearthed a video online over at googlevideo of him and I presenting at the Connecting Up conference earlier this year.

I knew these things would be used for unsavoury purposes, but never dreamt it would be this shocking!

Upcoming

Filed under: ConnectingUp — dnw @ 12:32 pm

I wandered across this site called Upcoming.org.

What is Upcoming.org?
Upcoming.org is a collaborative event calendar, completely driven by people like you. Enter in the events you’re attending, comment on events entered by others, and syndicate event listings to your own weblog.

I immediately went to see if anything was entered for Adelaide- which there was. My second thought was maybe ConnectingUp 2006 should be in there. What do you reckon Doug?

Horizontal Podcasting

Had a visit from Mike at the Horizontal HQ today. Amongst getting sidetracked by the ever-flowing creative parallel thought patterns that seem to happen when we get in close proximity to each other, we managed (albeit at the last minute) to get the beginning of some thoughts down on a podcast.

Blobcast #4 – Horizontal HQ Sessions #1
.
Mike (Learndog) & Dave (Lifekludger) chat about stuff they’re thinking about. This session is about using ODEO for the Disability History Project & starting to figure out what they will do at the Connecting Up 2006 conference.

small pieces in separate piles

I have been using delicious to tag certain web sites and articles that I think are interesting for ConnectingUp 2006 conference with the cu06 tag. I was hoping that over on technorati.com that it would pick up on the cu06 tag and display it in the page showing my delicious bookmarks, or in fact any delicious bookmarks from anybody that were tagged using the cu06 tag.

However it seems its not to be. Technorati does not seem to look at delicious at all. It looks at flicker and picks up tags from there but not delicious.

gada.be does a good job at bringing together tags from multiple sites, but from what I can see it seems that it doesn’t pick up delicious tags either.

What is going on? I cannot see any reason why these tag searching and aggregating sites are not including delicious tags. From what I can see there’s nothing in the delicious API that should prevent it, but I’m certainly no expert on these things either.

I’m not sure exactly what pubsub is up to in terms of their information sources. Feedster seems to find delicious bookmarks, but I’m not sure it looks at tags rather than just crawling terms and searching those – which is not the point – it’s the cross-pollination of sites with tags I’m concerned with.

The concept is meant to be ‘small pieces loosely joined‘ not ‘small pieces in separate piles‘. The focus needs to be on openness and cross platform integration and avoid slipping back into the safety of well-learned habits from years past of building portal empires – albeit using today’s tools.

All I can say is from a users point of view it seems like there is some ‘lovers tiffs’ with delicious.

So it looks as though I’ll have to try a couple of things to work around the issues and get the outcome I’d like to see.

Saving Doug’s hair – What’s Web2.0 about?

Over at Doug Jacquier’s blog, Doug is “doodling and sctratching his head” trying to answer some questions posed to him from Jody Mahoney at about Web2.0. This is what I think – he asked for it!

I see two main things happening that what is termed Web2.0 is shaping and in turn, is shaping Web2.0 (culture drives technology, technology enables what the culture desires – see my post here and here for my thoughts on, and links to, Supernova address by Linda Stone as to the interconnectedness that exists there)

First, as an extrapolation to a bit of Vince Holt’s comment on Doug’s post, I think it is not so much about “migrating from” a publishing platform as it is about making the platform more accessible to individuals and that thereby makes it more equitable. It is that change that makes the development of ‘community’ more possible.

Second, it’s about ways of distributing that published content that fit the culture and the age the people exist in – context.

There’s lots of issues and benefits and technology and ideas around those, but I see them as the core.

In generalist terms, things such as blogs, wikis, podcasts, vidcasts fit into the first. RSS, OPML, issues of Attention/Time-shifting fit in the second.

To get to Doug’s specific questions:

1. What’s *really* new on the Web, as opposed to buzzwords and sound bites?

Free, uncomplicated, no-knowledge-required personal publishing and cross-platform distribution.

2. Which tools best embody the new opportunities from your point of view and why?

Blogs, RSS agregators, Podcatchers, Tagging tools (delicious, technorati, feedster etc) on user level.
AJAX, XML/RSS, OPML, Folksonomies, podcasting on tech/behind scenes/user interface level.

3. Who’s doing the best work with the new tools (technically or in terms of social benefit or both)?

Technically- Too big, too many to list.
Social- Too early to call. Lots have huge potential.

4. What’s the bad news? What are the greatest barriers preventing web-based technology from producing social change?

  • Same one that existed with Web1.0 and prior – equitable access to the technology.
  • Education as to its use and benefits. (Uplifters required)
  • Fear of technology and change.
  • Fear of real or conceived privacy problems. (Identity issues)
  • ‘Walled garden’ thinking and attitudes. (cultivation of ‘openness’ and ‘trust’ required .. will come as stronger connections come in response to desire for focused attention)
  • Old habits and past traditions (ref Cluetrain, subversion).

Subversive Accomodation

Filed under: ConnectingUp — dnw @ 2:48 pm

Came across this interesting site called CanICrash? – a (blogger) community for travellers!

The idea is for bloggers to offer a couch/floor/bed or similar for any travelling bloggers to stay at. Crossed my mind could be handy for ConnectingUp2006 Conference.

This would offer anybody who is a blogger coming to CU a place to stay. Also give chance for extended pre/post conference catching up and ‘meshing‘. I might add my couch as an option. Maybe other Adelaide bloggers could follow.

Don’t forget to check the tag for ConnectingUp2006 on or .
