FaceTweet – the next killer app?

Would an app that allows people to post a status message to Facebook while mobile possibly be the next killer app?

Was catching up on my rss feeds on my mobile phone while travelling in the van on the way home, as I tend to do. Scanning through my friends Facebook status’ feed to see what they’d been up to, I saw Laurel had been cyber-streaking (is that again) and Mike was enjoying what was happening on the wall at the virtual danah boyd conference (yes, I know it’s not called that but it might as well be) while Beth made her fundraising goal and was buying gear for Cambodia.

I had the thought. Why couldn’t I change my status without having to go onto Facebook? (which is hard in the back of a van travelling in peak hour traffic with a pen in your mouth, pda perched, balancing on your hand, and on a 4inch screen that’s half taken up by a on screen keyboard).

It then struck me. That’d be just like a Twitter clone. You follow your friend’s status feed and post your own.

So, who’s gonna be the first to make that little bit of connectivity work? Unless of course there already is and I don’t know about it. In which case the question is, whose going to be te first to tell me where it is?

  1. I want to go the other way – I want to go to Facebook, change my status, and have it update on Twitter. Because I use Facebook, some. Twitter, not so much.

  2. Absolutely. I don’t use Twitter at all (yet). Maybe there’s evolving a need for a replicated status update service :)

I guess my point was why should I have to GO anywhere to say what I’m doing?

I want to be connected, not channeled.

Thanks for reading and for the thoughts Stephen.

  3. Hi Dave,

Thought I’d give you shout out! I update twitter status from my mobile phone. So, if you use twitter you can do what you want to do I think. Also, Twitter has an app for facebook and it does what Stephen wants to do.

  4. Hi Beth. Great to hear from you.

Yeah I’ve seen those apps, but I’m talking about a way of updating the status that is part of Facebook. I do not use twitter. I do use Facebook. My contention is that given an app like I propose I could in effect have a twitter like app that is Facebook based. Now, I know I could get a Twitter account. But yet another service? Where does it all end?

I’m not saying Twitter isn’t useful, or Facebook, just that there’s potential.

What Stephen is after is something that posts a tweet to Twitter when he changes his Facebook status – without having to use a seperate app. (at least that’s how I read what he wants).

Great thoughts, great opportunities. Interesting times…if not a bit disconnected.
