SMS your message to the world

Filed under: Technology, Thoughts — dnw @ 7:20 pm

I just had to post this as something about it really appeals to me.

The idea that anyone can send a SMS message that gets displayed on a huge electronic billboard just grabs me somewhere I can’t explain.

If I ever figure out why I like this I’ll let you know.

  1. Hey Dave, you got me thinking. The whole wiki/ta-da thing has more potential. Imagine a page that was yours, which your friends/family could see, which consisted entirely of stickynotes, which you add simply by sending an SMS. So your space becomes SMS-writeable. On the space, I can keep my Christmas presents list, my shopping list, thoughts … and can add to it by phone message (VOIP style), by SMS, by email, and by web. Everything just appears on the space like an online desktop. And it can be shared just by your family, or the general public. Kind of like a kitchen pinboard online - very semi-structured. Perhaps we should do this? I can see a new meme… Semistructure…

  2. Hey Andy. Great thoughts. I can relate to it as I use the stickynotes in Outlook all the time. I do that not because it’s the worlds best notepad but because I know whatever I put in there will be sync’ed to my PDA and thus I’ll have it wherever I am. So yes, what you outline is ideal as it’s accessible wherever there’s a web browser (and more and more this will mean portable devices). I think in addition this stickynotes repository should be able to be sync’ed to a mobile device - PDA, phone etc.

Imagine then the idea of your Mum’s fridge having a LCD panel that is auto-updated via RSS whenever you post a note to your ’stickysite’. And she could respond using SMS to your site via her mobile phone or via a web->SMS gateway accessed via a virtual phonepad on the fridge LCD panel.

SMS is so accepted and used that it seems using it as the phoneweb input device would be a ripper. Yeah, we should do it. How do we start?
